01Tree Pruning

Healthier trees, safer yards

Pruning is about removing the right branches, not as many as possible. Our arborists selectively thin, lift and reduce trees to improve their structure, let light and air through the canopy, and take out the dead and weak wood that fails in storms.

We know the local species, from figs and African mahoganies to poincianas and native rainforest trees, and how each responds to pruning in a tropical climate. Every cut is made to the Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees, so the tree heals well and keeps its natural shape.

Regular pruning adds value too. A well-shaped, healthy tree improves kerb appeal, and a tree that’s maintained is far less likely to need emergency work after a cyclone.

02The detail

Types of pruning

Crown thinning

Selected branches removed to reduce weight and wind resistance, and let light through.

Crown lifting

Lower limbs removed for clearance over driveways, paths and roofs.

Crown reduction

The canopy reduced in height or spread while keeping a natural shape.

Deadwooding

Dead, dying and broken branches removed before they fall.

Formative pruning

Young trees shaped early so they grow a strong structure.

Palm pruning

Fronds and seed pods removed as part of palm maintenance.

03Good to know

Why pruning is worth it

Removing dead, diseased or crowded branches stops pests and decay spreading, improves airflow and encourages healthy growth. Thinning the crown also reduces the load on the tree in high winds, which is the single biggest factor in storm damage.

Professional pruning keeps a tree’s natural form, so it looks better for longer and doesn’t need heavy cutting later.

  • Less storm damage and fewer falling limbs
  • Better health, airflow and light
  • Natural shape and better kerb appeal

06FAQs

Tree Pruning questions

How often should trees be pruned?

Most established trees benefit from an inspection and prune every one to three years. Young trees are best formatively pruned every two to three years while they establish their structure.

What is crown thinning and why is it done?

Crown thinning removes selected branches throughout the canopy to reduce weight, let in light and improve airflow. It’s one of the best ways to reduce storm risk without changing the tree’s shape.

Is tree topping a good idea?

Generally no. Topping leaves large wounds and causes weak, fast regrowth that breaks easily. Crown reduction pruning achieves a smaller tree without the damage.

Can you prune trees near power lines?

Trees close to power lines need specialised clearance work and, in some cases, the network operator. Tell us when you book and we’ll advise the safest approach.
